Unlocking the Mysteries of Cakes for Men
We love the men in our lives for so many reasons—their strength, their humor, their mad grilling skills. They provide care and support that goes beyond what we get from our girlfriends. My husband, Lance, is exactly the solid base I need.
Chances are your customers feel the same way about their special guys. But when it comes to choosing a cake for their favorite man? Many customers are at a loss. And frankly, it’s for good reason. While a flower-covered cake is a safe bet for females of any age, there’s really no equivalent for masculine cakes. It seems men share less common ground in the cake department, and a one-look-fits-all approach just doesn’t cut it.
That’s why the DecoPac design team developed our new Simple Pleasures collection. These masculine cake designs feature different genres, activities and hobbies, especially for men who arent pro sports fans. The palette is inspired by nature and the style is relaxed to match the informal gatherings most men prefer. Another aspect of this trend is a handcrafted approach that heightens the manly feel. So break out your spatula and create some simple texture to the icing. Icing that’s too perfect can come across as more feminine.
I know it sounds cliché, but I believe the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Men’s cakes are usually more decadent so consider beer-infused batters or other rich, on-trend flavors. And nine times out of ten, you can’t go wrong with chocolate. Even men who say they don’t like chocolate are known to gobble up a plate of brownies. At least that’s the case at my house.
For birthdays and Father’s Day, these Simple Pleasure cake designs are ready for action, so how do you help customers decide on the perfect cake?
Since most men aren’t as open as women, your customer may have a difficult time identifying a cake theme for the celebration. Unless the man is very passionate about a certain hobby, you’ll have to do a little digging: I promise, no heavy lifting is required. Investigative work is key to solving the puzzle. First, you’ll need to know a bit about his personality. Ask how he spends his free time. Find out what he does when he has a free weekend. Listen carefully to your customer and use your creativity to connect the dots. He likes to tinker in the garage? Maybe it’s a cake featuring tools.Another useful prompt is to ask about a favorite vacation or special memory.
The idea is to uncover a happy moment from his life. Because that’s what you want to create—another happy moment.
About the Decorator
Hi, I’m Tina. I caught the cake decorating bug early by helping my Mom. She wasn’t great at making roses, even Dad’s were better, so I kept practicing until I was the best rose maker in the family. Soon I started creating cakes for friends and family, and eventually worked as a cake decorator and Team Lead in Bakery at SuperTarget. Now I work at DecoPac as a cake decorator and designer supervisor, managing a team of cake decorators, designing cakes, and sharing tips in tutorial videos. I’m completely self-taught, and enjoy learning from other cake decorators.
