Magical, Mythical and Totally Adaptable, Give Unicorn and Mermaid Cakes a Seasonal Makeover
If you’re like me, you own a pair of boots you can’t live without. Mine are incredibly comfortable, super cute, and I can wear them for any occasion.
Maybe that’s why I love our Unicorn Creations and Mystical Mermaid DecoSets® so much. Supremely versatile, these DecoSets® adapt to any holiday, celebration or season simply by changing up color palettes or adding special touches. And, since these magical, mythical creatures are still red hot with consumers, we developed ways to expand your cake offerings in the Unicorn and Mermaid realms for Halloween, Christmas/Winter and Valentine’s Day. Get ready: Your creativity and imagination are about to be switched on.
Who says Unicorns don’t dress up for Halloween? This easy-to-make “costume” features Neon Bright Green Buttercream frosting with a black Franken-mane made from donut icing tinted with gel color. Simple white squiggles and piped scars reinforce the monster vibe. Check out the scar on the horn, too. These unlicensed products, give you license to go crazy.
Mermaid from the Green Lagoon
This Halloween scene shows how easy it is to change up color palettes. Black, teal, and neon green airbrush create murky depths while neon green donut icing oozes on the surface. Black and purple piped seaweed surround the Mermaid’s friends while a black spider emerges from his piped web. We added blue, purple, green and white candy pearls from our Shimmer Spring Mix for dimension and extra pops of color.
Very Merry Mane
This Santa-inspired cake is sweet and simple. The red, white and green mane is dotted with our Pearl Berry Holly Mix and white Non-Pareils. A Santa Hat DecoPic® adds festive flair. A red DecoShapes Fondant strip serves as Santa’s signature belt with a buckle made of yellow icing. It’s a very merry design that doesn’t require a workshop of elves to create.
Winter Wonderland Mermaid
Love at First Blush
It’s easy to adore this Unicorn cake with blushing cheeks made from spots of airbrush color. To show some extra love, the multi-pink mane is adorned with our Red Heart Cupcake Rings, Heart with Wings Sugar Dec-Ons and our Valentine Fusion Mix. We also used the Fusion Mix for the pretty, enrobed border.
Tip: To create an enrobed border, simply pipe the border, place your cake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet and adhere the Fusion Mix with a gloved hand. Any extra mix that spills onto the cookie sheet is easily funneled back into the container.
Sea of Love
Why fall in love when you can dive in? Buttercream icing, tinted in Malibu Blue, creates the aquatic setting for a Valentine Fusion Mix heart and the Mermaid’s tail. Other characters from the Mystical Mermaid DecoSet float among pink piped seaweed and white dots on the cake’s side. A wavy top border gives the cake a dreamy effect, while the enrobed bottom border using the Valentine Fusion Mix adds thematic depth. (For a tip on creating the enrobed border, see Love at First Blush.)
Tip: Before adding the Valentine Fusion Mix, pipe a heart on top as a barrier then carefully adhere the Fusion Mix inside. It gives you a clean edge and ensures a perfect heart shape.

ABOUT THE DECORATOR
Hi, I’m Tina. I caught the cake decorating bug early by helping my Mom. She wasn’t great at making roses, even Dad’s were better, so I kept practicing until I was the best rose maker in the family. Soon I started creating cakes for friends and family, and eventually worked as a cake decorator and Team Lead in Bakery at SuperTarget. Now I work at DecoPac as a cake decorator and designer supervisor, managing a team of cake decorators, designing cakes, and sharing tips in tutorial videos. I’m completely self-taught, and enjoy learning from other cake decorators.
